When it comes to storing or saving your extra stuff to reduce clutter, self storage units are perfect facilities to keep things organized. As a client renting for space, it’s your responsibility to arrange your stuff to be placed in the unit. Although self storage companies can also offer you an added service for packing your belongings, at the end of the day, you will still find yourself opting to prepare your stuff all by yourself.
What you can do to save time and pack your things easier is to follow these important steps:
1. Create an inventory of the things you will pack in these self storage units. Before you get into packing, labeling, and putting stuff in boxes, make sure you have a list of every item. Such list must contain quantity and item description.
2. Estimate the value of the items to be placed in the self storage. In the event damages occurred due to an unexpected circumstance, you’ll have an accurate idea with regards to insurance cost.
3. Place all items in boxes, plastic containers, and wrap big objects in bubble wrap. Doing these measures will keep your things away from dirt and damage. Do not place objects though in plastic bags to avoid mildew formation.
4. Group all related objects in one box (carpentry tools, kitchen wares, linens and beddings, etc.). Label and seal all boxes after packing them so it will be easier for you to locate your things when you need them.
5. If you’re moving to another place (Detroit for instance), it’s advisable that you store appliances in dry condition. For example, once you rented a Detroit self storage where you want to keep your fridge, make sure you have already defrosted the appliance to avoid any electrical damage.
6. Finally, reuse extra space coming from wardrobe pieces or dressers. To save you rent from self storage units, you may use those extra drawers and cabinets. Just make sure that the items you’ll be placing there are also properly packed.
Preparing, packing, and storing your things in self storage units are not that hard. Your only challenge is to be creative in utilizing all spaces possible.
